Scholarship Days seeks volunteers – Meet a talented group of prospective Wartburg students by volunteering for Scholarship Day interviews on Nov. 8, Nov. 15, Jan. 17 or Jan. 23. Contact Ben Stadler-Ammon.
Coming Up – High school seniors who meet qualifications for Regents and Presidential Scholarships can increase their award by participating in one of the four Scholarship Days. Students must be admitted to be eligible.
Meistersinger audition dates set – Meistersinger Music Scholarships offer awards of up to $5,000 per year to talented high school musicians. Audition dates are Nov. 7 and Jan. 16, 22 and 30.
Campus Visit Days still available – Remaining Visit Days are designed for students interested in music, communication arts, business, math/computer science/physics, education, social sciences and exploring. Bring a student for a Visit Day or an individual visit.

Holiday Shoppe benefits low-income families – The Wartburg Social Work Club is coordinating its 23rd annual Bremer County Holiday Shoppe, which provides approximately 250 low-income families with gifts for children as well as winter clothing, toiletries and wrapping paper. Monetary gifts to support Holiday Shoppe can be sent to the Advancement Office or given online. List Holiday Shoppe as the gift designation.

Events coincide with Day of Climate Action 350 – EARTH, Students for Peace and Justice, Student Senate and I-Club are hosting several events to coincide with this week’s International Day of Climate Action 350. Read more.
Wartburg Choir to perform in Des Moines, Minneapolis – The Wartburg Choir will be the guest choir Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the Raccoon River Conference Vocal Festival. The 7 p.m. concert will be held at Saydel High School in Des Moines. Cost: $5 for adults, $3 for students. The Wartburg Choir will provide a majority of the music at this concert. The festival choir will be comprised of students from selected area high schools.
Alumni and choir aficionados are invited to hear the choir at the following church services in Minneapolis Nov. 14-15: Saturday, Nov. 14 – 5 p.m. service, St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Eden Prairie Sunday, Nov. 15 – 9, 10, 11 a.m. and 12 noon services, Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, Minneapolis Campus If you can provide overnight housing for students on Saturday, Nov. 14, please contact music tour coordinator Renee Voves by e-mail or at 319-352-8499.
Christmas with Wartburg tickets available soon – Tickets will go on sale Monday, Nov. 2, for Christmas with Wartburg performances and for meals that will be available preceding each concert.
Campus to observe Berlin Wall anniversary - Wartburg will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall Nov. 9-13. Events will include a graffiti contest, 5K run/walk, speech competition, gala event and German film series.
Orange Connection 2010 dates set – Volunteer as a professional or personal host for Wartburg students who will spend Winter Break in Chicago, March 6-9, for Orange Connection 2010. Students will join alumni for a networking reception on Sunday, March 7, will job shadow with professional hosts on Monday and Tuesday, and stay at the homes of personal hosts Sunday and Monday nights. Over the past four years, approximately 40 students have benefited from this opportunity. Contact the alumni office to sign up as a volunteer.
Tour prices reduced – Prices for next summer’s Alpine and Italy tours have been reduced, due to recent decreases in travel expenses. A few spots still remain. Both tours include a stop at the Oberammergau Passion Play.
Choir alums invited to sing at Carnegie Hall – Wartburg Choir alumni have been invited to participate in a June 27 performance of Bach’s Magnificat, conducted by Dr. Paul Torkelson ’76 at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Wartburg College and Midamerica Productions are offering a New York City tour for choir alumni and others interested in hearing the performance. Dates are June 24-28. Sign up for the tour here.
Former professor leaves legacy in law, education – Dr. K.D. Briner ’61, a former Wartburg professor and retired judge, died Oct. 4 in Kansas City, Mo. Briner taught English and directed the Chrysalis honors program from 1966 to 1976, then pursued a law degree at the University of Iowa. He served as a judge in the Iowa First Judicial District, Black Hawk County, from 1994 to 2007. Memorials may be directed to the Sam and Marilyn Michaelson Scholarship at Wartburg.
Wartburg mentioned in USA Today – An Oct. 20 sports cover story in USA Today mentioned Wartburg in a feature about Messiah College. Only three NCAA colleges in the country won three national titles last season: Wartburg and Messiah in Division III and Texas A&M in Division I. |

Wartburg receives Higher Education Civic Engagement Award - President Colson and other Wartburg staff members attended a luncheon in Washington, D.C. on Monday, October 19, to accept the award. Wartburg was also honored at the Washington Center's Gala 2009 Monday evening. Read more.
Give a Wartburg cookbook for Christmas – Tower Agency is creating a cookbook of recipes submitted by students, parents and alumni. Cookbooks are $15, with a $5 shipping charge, and will be delivered in mid-December. E-mail Tower Agency for order information. Deadline to submit a favorite recipe is Tuesday, Oct. 27. Go to typensave.com and click on the login button. Type your name in the contributor line. The group login is orange and the password is TowerAgency. Recipes are due Tuesday, Oct. 27.
Enrollment holds steady – Wartburg’s 2009-10 enrollment is exactly 1,800 students, up one from last year and showing a strong increase in full-time students, a record number of diversity students, and a record-tying retention rate. Full-time equivalent enrollment is 1,766, the second-highest total in history. The 87 percent retention rate ties a record set in 1997-98. U.S. students of color now comprise 9 percent of the student body. International students from 38 countries represent 5 percent of total enrollment.
Top majors - Biology tops business administration as Wartburg's leading major in the 2009-10 enrollment report. The top five majors are biology, 304; business administration, 289; communication arts, 139; elementary education, 113; and psychology, 86.
Study abroad - Nine Wartburg students are studying abroad in eight different countries during Fall Term including Argentina, Austria, Brazil, China, Ecuador, France, Germany, and Spain.
Winter Break service trips set new record - Students will be involved in a record number of 16 service trips during Winter Term Break, March 5-14. Destinations include Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North and South Carolina and Tennessee. Alumni interested in participating should contact Renee Sedlacek. See the complete list of trips and leaders.
Walk for Wishes raises nearly $7,000 - A Cedar Valley Walk for Wishes at The W on Oct. 4 raised $6,795, the second-highest total among six Iowa Make A Wish Foundation events scheduled that day. About 85 percent of the 166 Waverly participants were Wartburg students. Wartburg President Darrel D. Colson served as the VIP host.
Women’s golf team wins conference title – The Wartburg women’s golf team won a third consecutive Iowa Conference title on Oct. 3, its fifth in the past six years.
History professor observes German elections – Dr. Dan Walther, Gerald R. Kleinfeld Distinguished Professor of German History, was among 18 scholars and journalists from four continents selected to observe the quadrennial Bundestag parliamentary elections Sept. 27. Read more.
